“God rest you merry, gentlemen” is one of the oldest surviving carols in the English language, dating back to the sixteenth century or earlier. This Advent, we return to those tidings of comfort and joy, brought to us with the coming of God in Jesus Christ at Christmas. And we explore what it means for us to experience those tidings, fulfilled in our lives and in a world that is weary and hurting.
In this, we respond to the invitation of the Archbishops of York and Canterbury to take up this the theme of Comfort & Joy this year. They write: “Christmas this year will be different … What has not changed is the story and the meaning of Jesus’ birth. God is with us. With us in the mess as in the good, in the disappointment and the difficulty, in sorrow and in celebration.” http://https://www.churchofengland.org/resources/preparing-advent-christmas-2020-comfort-and-joy
Sign up now and join our Advent Quiet Day, 11.00am-3.00pm, Saturday 28th November
We explore the themes of comfort and joy through the day in prayer, Bible study, discussion and time for silent reflection. Held on Zoom, we open with Morning Prayer, and two 45-minute sessions in the morning, with a break in between. After Midday Prayer, you are invited to bring lunch to share and chat, and then to take 90 minutes silent time before coming back together again for Evening Prayer.
