Guidance for Burials and Memorials in Tetbury
Everyone is entitled to either a burial service (funeral) or to have their ashes buried in their local parish churchyard by their local parish priest regardless of whether they attended church or not. Speak to our vicar, Reverend V.J. (Poppy) Hughes, for more information.
Both St Marys and St Saviours churchyards have been closed for many years but facilities are available for the burial of ashes in both locations. Tetbury Council also provide alternative places of burial, attached to St Saviours Churchyard, and the minister can carry out the service there instead of the church or crematorium.
It is normal for families to make arrangements for burial through their funeral director. Often families will wish to install a memorial on the burial plot. Once again this can be arranged through their funeral director or directly with a stonemason who will act as their agents.
The Diocese has a large number of beautiful churchyards. It is very important to preserve their beauty, which easily can be spoilt by the introduction of memorials of inappropriate material or design. Time should be taken by all those wishing to erect a memorial for consideration of what would be suitable. In either case the families will need to arrange for permission, with the appropriate authority, for both burial and installation of memorials to take place.
The following general guidance is provided on the Gloucester Diocese website, in the document: Churchyard Regulations. This document includes the general recommendations for size, shape, lettering, decoration and materials for memorials.
Please note that a minimum of six months must elapse between the death of the person to be commemorated and the application for permission to install a memorial. Additional local restrictions are applied to the memorials in St Saviours Churchyard. Details are provided in this document
The St Saviours Burial Areas Plan illustrates how the churchyard is organized and who to contact to discuss internments.
