May 2019

April 2019 was a memorable month for St Marys’ Church.

We have had so much to celebrate. It began with the completion of our fantastic new West Door entrance. With its wide sweeping steps and ramp, it looks like arms open to welcome people in. It is beautiful! If you haven’t seen it already, do call by.

And that was matched by the wonderful news that our Christian Aid 100 mile walk had raised the money needed, so that with match-funding from the charity ‘Bread for the World’ a total of £100,00 goes to help the millions who have been forced to flee the war in Syria.

Our journey through Holy Week was a profound experience, sharing and reflecting together on the final events of the Last Supper and Jesus’ arrest, trial and crucifixion. Then, on Holy Saturday, we met at 9.00pm to light the ‘Easter Fire’ outside the church. This symbolises the return of light: Jesus risen from the dead. That evening our service finished with fireworks, bells and a glass of bubbly to celebrate. That was followed by a joyful family service – with an egg hunt – on Easter morning.

Looking ahead to May, we continue to celebrate the Easter Season, and you’re invited to join us at 10.0am for our main Sunday service, with the ‘Little Fishes’ Sunday School for Children. Christian Aid week is the 12th to the 18th of May, and our family gathering – ISingPop CELEBRATE – meets again on Sunday 26th May at 4.00pm in St Mary’s School Hall.

I look forward very much to sharing Wacky Races with everyone, including the customary blessing of the course – and I look forward to seeing you soon

With love and prayers,
The Revd Poppy Hughes
Parish Priest, St Mary the Virgin & St Mary Magdalen Church, Tetbury
