Meditations for Maundy Thursday: A New Commandment

You may wish to have with you tokens of a shared meal – something to eat and drink. Perhaps bread and wine. Perhaps crackers and juice.
At the heart of our worship on Maundy Thursday evening are Jesus’ words that night: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” As the disciples – as we gather – we witness to Jesus’ act of great love as he washes the disciples’ feet. Then, sitting down at the table we share in the breaking of bread at the Last Supper. Finally we follow as Jesus leads his disciples, leaving the Upper Room and out to the Watch at Gethsemane.
