Updated guidance on good hygiene practices

March 13, 2020

Everybody is asked to share the Peace in ways which do not involve contact (that is, not shaking hands etc) Following updated advice, Holy Communion will now be distributed in one kind only (that is, the consecrated bread/wafer/host), with the priest alone taking the wine. We are asking everyone to receive the bread/wafer/host on the hand ONLY (not on the tongue). If possible, when attending the Eucharist in particular please sanitise your hands as you come into church, if sanitized gel. Ministers are required to sanitise their hands before and after distributing communion. Everyone will be invited to receive communion standing, rather than kneeling at the communion rail, again to…

Love is in the air! There’s something new for Valentine’s at St Marys’ Church this year, with a special celebration of Love and Commitment at our 10am service on Sunday 16th February. Our theme is love in all its wonderful shapes and sizes – from marriage, friendships and parenting, to our commitment to caring for others and for the world. There will be favourite hymns, readings and prayers on the theme, and the chance to make a personal commitment to cherish our loved ones. Everyone is welcome, with special activities for children in our Little Fishes Sunday School. And perhaps…

Mary and Joseph. A donkey, the angels, shepherds and the three kings. Bethlehem. A stable, a baby in the manger. King Herod. We all know the Christmas story, from school nativity plays and the television, and from the pictures on Christmas cards. We tell the story again each year, and we become so familiar with it that it can feel like it loses its impact. As we reach December, we begin Advent. It is a special time of preparation, when we get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a time to pause and reflect, and to open…

As we celebrate harvest this month, let’s cultivate thankful hearts! What do you think of this story? One Christmas a mother decided not to remind her children to write thank-you notes for the gifts they received. As a result, they never sent their grandmother acknowledgements of the generous cheques she had given. The next year, things were different, however. “The children came over in person to thank me,” the grandmother told a friend. “How wonderful!” the friend exclaimed. “What do you think caused the change in behaviour?” “Oh, that’s easy,” the grandmother replied. “This year I didn’t sign the cheques.”…

I hope the summer brings promises of fun and relaxing with friends and family. For starters, make a date to come and join in the fun of St Marys’ Church Summer Fete on Saturday 6th July, 2.00-4.30pm. It’s the best of an English summer … held on the Vicarage lawn with games, stalls, dog show and delicious cream teas. I can never decide my best bit: choosing the “Vicar’s Favourite” in the dog show or a lovely plate of scones, jam and cream. Let’s hope and pray that the sun shines – but if it’s rainy, join us in the…

I wonder, what’s your favourite hymn? It’s wedding season now, so that’s a vital question for all the lovely couples to be married in St Marys’ this summer. I love discussing chatting through the choices with our couples as they prepare for their big day. It’s always a good idea to choose hymns which everyone knows, so we get some good hearty singing. And in a marriage service, I always suggest something cheerful to begin with, then something a bit gentler in the middle, before they make their marriage vows, and a good singalong to finish. So, we get lots…

April 2019 was a memorable month for St Marys’ Church. We have had so much to celebrate. It began with the completion of our fantastic new West Door entrance. With its wide sweeping steps and ramp, it looks like arms open to welcome people in. It is beautiful! If you haven’t seen it already, do call by. And that was matched by the wonderful news that our Christian Aid 100 mile walk had raised the money needed, so that with match-funding from the charity ‘Bread for the World’ a total of £100,00 goes to help the millions who have been…

“When God created the world … … where did he find all the bits?” That’s one of the best questions I’ve ever been asked! It was from a child of course. They often have the best questions, don’t they? It’s questions like this that encouraged our churches in Tetbury to start “iSingPop Celebrate”. New for all the family meets for the first time on Sunday 24th February at 4pm at St Mary’s School Hall. With different themes each month, we will explore some of our questions, big and small, with some of the best-loved Bible stories, crafts, chatting and prayers.…
