There has been a Christian place of worship on the site of St Marys' since at least 681 AD. The present church was built following the demolition of the medieval church in 1777. The church today, with its elegant spire, is a focal point in the town. St Marys' is open every day for people to come and visit, sit quietly, or attend any of the regular services.
Public Worship during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Worship in our church buildings
With the churchwardens, this week we made the decision to suspend public worship in all our church buildings for the time being. This is in response to the gravity of the situation: the increased risk of transmission of Covid-19, and the Chief Medical Officer's request that we stay at home and avoid contact with others. This will of course be kept under review, as public worship in church buildings is allowed under current restrictions. We will keep you updated through the coming days.

April 2020 – The only impossible journey is the one you never begin
Now that’s a great quote from the life coach Tony Robbins. Or how about this: “It’s your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.” One of the things I love about the Christian faith is that it is all about journeying, and pilgrimage. And…
Updated guidance on good hygiene practices
Everybody is asked to share the Peace in ways which do not involve contact (that is, not shaking hands etc) Following updated advice, Holy Communion will now be distributed in one kind only (that is, the consecrated bread/wafer/host), with the priest alone taking the wine. We are asking everyone to receive the bread/wafer/host on the hand ONLY (not on the tongue)….

Mary and Joseph. A donkey, the angels, shepherds and the three kings. Bethlehem. A stable, a baby in the manger. King Herod. We all know the Christmas story, from school nativity plays and the television, and from the pictures on Christmas cards. We tell the story again each year, and we become so familiar with…
October 2019
As we celebrate harvest this month, let’s cultivate thankful hearts! What do you think of this story? One Christmas a mother decided not to remind her children to write thank-you notes for the gifts they received. As a result, they never sent their grandmother acknowledgements of the generous cheques she had given. The next year,…
